Handley Urethane
Solvent-based polyurethane in 20L trade packs. Four sheens. Plus the matched Rapid Seal primer. The traditional Australian trade coating for timber, parquet and cork.
What it is
Handley Urethane is a single-component solvent-based polyurethane topcoat from Handley Industries. It's one of the traditional trade coatings that Australian floor sanders have been running for decades on timber, parquet and cork floors -- tough, flexible, heat and chemical resistant, and forgiving on the brush or roller. Sand-Aid stocks it in the 20L trade pack across all four sheens, plus the Rapid Seal primer that pairs with it.
Sheen levels
Gloss
Traditional high-shine. Showroom floors, commercial fitouts, old-school look.
Satin
The all-purpose residential pick. Soft reflection, classic timber floor.
Low Sheen
Subtle, flat-ish finish. Pairs with Handley Anti-Slip for a P4 slip rating.
Matt
Closest to untreated. Hides scratches and footprint marks on busy residential.
All four sheens are inter-mixable -- you can blend gloss and satin, satin and low sheen, or dial in an exact sheen between the standard grades by mixing two pots. Handy when a client wants "somewhere between satin and matt" and you can make it on the spot.
Handley Urethane Rapid Seal
Fast primer for the solvent system
Handley Urethane Rapid Seal is the matched primer for the Handley Urethane topcoat range. It holds the timber at a lighter colour (useful if you don't want the deep amber shift solvent poly can give) and cures fast -- walk-on in about 30 minutes depending on temperature -- so you can seal and start topcoating the same day instead of losing a day to primer cure. Coverage 7-8 sqm per litre.

Why use solvent over water-based?
Solvent polyurethane is still the right call for a few trade scenarios:
- Traditional look. Solvent poly ambers the timber slightly over time -- some clients specifically want that warm aged colour you can't get from a non-yellowing water-based system.
- Flexibility. Handley Urethane flexes with the boards through seasonal movement, which works well on cork and on older flexible subfloors.
- Forgiving application. Solvent coatings are more forgiving on the brush than a tight water-based, so they suit older contractors who trained on them and DIY floors where the applicator isn't perfect.
- Chemical resistance. Stands up to spills in kitchens, laundries, commercial prep areas.
- Cost. Solvent poly in 20L trade packs is typically cheaper per litre than premium water-based systems.
How to apply
Sand to a fine grit (our grit picker gives you the SIA belt sequence). Dust off. Apply one coat of Handley Urethane Rapid Seal at around 7-8 sqm/L, let it dry through the ~30 minute window (longer in cold weather). Light abrade if grain has raised. Two coats of your chosen Handley Urethane sheen at 8-10 sqm/L each. Allow the drying time printed on the tin between coats -- solvent poly is more temperature sensitive than water-based. Keep the site ventilated.
