Bona Mega
The residential workhorse. Single-component polyurethane with oxygen cross-linking. Four sheens. Great flow, easy apply, proper wear.
What it is
Mega is Bona's single-component water-based polyurethane for residential floors. The clever bit is the oxygen cross-linking -- rather than just drying, Mega reacts with oxygen from the air as it cures, so you end up with a harder, more scratch-resistant finish than a plain 1K drying poly. It's been around for decades, it's the biggest-selling 1K water-based finish in the world, and it's the default Brad reaches for on a busy family home.
Why installers use it
- Oxygen cross-link cure. Not just a drying single-pack -- it chemically cross-links with air, so you get real scratch and scuff resistance out of a one-component can.
- No mixing, no pot life. Open the can, pour, apply. Leftovers go back on the shelf for the next job.
- 5 mg/100 rev wear rating (SIS 923509) -- serious wear resistance for a 1K finish.
- 100% polyurethane. Full poly performance, not a modified acrylic.
- Non-yellowing. Holds its colour over years of sun and traffic.
- Great flow and levelling. Forgiving on the brush, lays down smooth, easy to work with even if you're not rolling 400 m² every week.
- Works with every Bona primer. Classic UX for natural tone, Prime Intense for tannin control and grain pop.
Sheen options
- Gloss — the traditional high-shine finish. Hospitality, older homes, showroom floors.
- Satin — 45% gloss at 60°. The most popular residential choice.
- Matt — 25% gloss. Soft sheen, hides scratches better, feels more natural underfoot.
- Extra Matt — 10% gloss. The closest 1K finish to a raw-timber look.

Mega vs Wave 2K vs Traffic HD?
Mega is the easy one-pot residential default -- the go-to for a busy family home where you want real performance without the extra step of mixing hardener. Wave 2K steps up to genuine two-component chemistry when the floor is going to take heavier residential or light-commercial traffic. Traffic HD is the top of the tree for retail, hospitality and serious commercial. Ring with the species, the traffic profile, and the sheen you're after -- you'll get the right finish in the right sheen dialled in on the call.
How to apply
Sand to a fine grit, dust off, prime with Classic UX (or Prime Intense if you're working blackbutt, tallowwood or another high-tannin species). Two coats of Mega at 8-10 m²/L with 2-3 hours between. Light intercoat abrade between coats. Walk-on per the TDS window.
Spec a Mega job?
Ring with the species, the square meters, and the sheen. You'll get the primer, the litres, and the sequence in one call.
