Blackbutt Flooring
Sanding, priming, and finishing guide for blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) -- one of the most popular and most callback-prone species in Australian floor sanding.
Species characteristics
- Janka hardness: 9.1 kN -- mid-range Australian hardwood. Not as hard as ironbark or spotted gum, but hard enough to require a full grit sequence.
- Grain: Generally straight, occasionally interlocked. Sands predictably with the belt sander.
- Colour: Pale golden-brown to honey. One of the lightest Australian hardwoods, which makes it popular for modern interiors.
- Tannin level: High. This is the species most associated with tannin bleed in Australia. The tannins are colourless in raw timber but turn grey-green when activated by water in a water-based coating.
- Common issues: Tannin bleed is the number one problem. Also prone to fine sanding marks showing through clear finishes due to its light colour.
Recommended grit sequence
For a standard blackbutt sand (existing floor, previous finish removed):
- Belt sander: P40 → P60 → P80 → P100 (SIA belts)
- Edger: Match the belt grits. P40 → P60 → P80 → P100.
- Buffer/screen: P120 screen or mesh to blend belt and edger zones.
If the floor is in rough condition (heavy paint, deep scratches, significant cupping), start at P24. For a well-maintained floor needing a light sand, start at P60. Use the Grit Sequence Picker to get a sequence tuned to the exact condition.
Recommended primer
Bona Prime Intense -- this is non-negotiable on blackbutt under water-based topcoats. Prime Intense is a tannin-control primer that seals the tannins into the timber before the topcoat goes on. It also enhances the natural golden colour of blackbutt, giving a richer result than a neutral primer would.
Do not use Classic UX on blackbutt under water-based polyurethane. Classic UX is a general-purpose primer designed for low-tannin species like Tasmanian oak, American oak, and messmate. On blackbutt, it will not stop the tannin bleed. For a deeper explanation, see the tannin bleed guide.
If finishing with solvent polyurethane (Handley Urethane), tannin bleed is less of a risk because solvent does not activate the tannins the way water does. A solvent sealer coat is still recommended for adhesion.
Recommended topcoats
- Bona Traffic HD: Commercial-grade 2K water-based. Maximum durability for high-traffic blackbutt floors.
- Bona Wave 2K: Heavy residential 2K at a more accessible price point. Excellent durability without the Traffic HD price tag.
- Bona Mega: Single-component residential. Reliable, easy to apply, good abrasion resistance for standard residential traffic.
- Bona Traffic GO: Fast-cure 2K for same-day turnaround jobs. Furniture back in 12 hours.
Common mistakes on blackbutt
- Skipping Prime Intense. The most expensive mistake. Tannin bleed shows up after the topcoat cures and cannot be fixed without a full sand-back. Always prime with Prime Intense.
- Skipping grits. Blackbutt's light colour shows every sanding mark. Jumping from P40 to P100 leaves visible P40 scratches under the finish. Sand every grit in sequence.
- Coating too early. Blackbutt boards from new builds may still be acclimating. Check moisture content with a pin meter -- target 9-14% MC for Australian coastal conditions. See the moisture content guide.
- Ignoring the edger blend zone. The boundary between belt and edger zones is visible on blackbutt because the colour is so even. Buff the entire floor with a P120 screen after the final grit to blend the two zones. See the picture framing guide.
FAQs: blackbutt flooring
Can blackbutt be stained?
Yes, but the tight grain means stain absorption is relatively even. Bona DriFast Stain works well on blackbutt. Apply after the final sand, before Prime Intense. Test a small area first to confirm the colour.
Does blackbutt need a water-based finish?
No. Both water-based (Bona) and solvent (Handley Urethane) work on blackbutt. Water-based preserves the natural pale colour. Solvent adds amber warmth. The choice depends on the client's preference.
How do I fix tannin bleed on a finished blackbutt floor?
Sand back to bare timber, prime with Prime Intense, and recoat. There is no shortcut -- screen and recoat will not hide tannin bleed that is already in the film.
